The Smee Patriarchs of New Zealand
The earliest Smee settlers in New Zealand I have found were in 1852
on the Berwick Castle - 2 British Army pensioners Richard and Edward,
who may have been brothers, joined the Fencibles, a small group of ex
soldiers who emigrated to help defend the early settlements on the
promise of land grants, Edward died (as did his Son) on the Voyage near
the Falkland Islands and his Widow remarried to another Fencible after
arriving in New Zealand. Confusion is caused by the Registration of
Edward and his son's deaths by the Ships Captain when the ship docked at
Hobart, Tasmania some time later.
